Religious Education

Children.- "Parents have the first responsibility for the education of their children. They bear witness to this responsibility first by creating a home where tenderness, forgiveness, respect, fidelity, and disinterested service are the rule...Education in the faith by the parents should begin in the child's earliest years... Family catechesis preceeds, accompanies, and enriches other forms of instruction in the faith...The parish is the Eucharistic community and the heart of the liturgical life of Christian families; it is a privileged place for the catechesis of children and parents." (CCC 2223 and 2226)  *CCC=Cathechism of the Catholic Church

St. Stanilsaus Kostka Parish provides religious education for students enrolled in public schools from grade 1 through grade 8.  Religious education programs for children take place on Sundays.  One program serves the English-speaking community and takes place before the 10:00 a.m. Mass; the other program serves the Spanish-speaking community and takes place before the 11:30 a.m. Mass.

If your child is entering 1st grade in September, please consider enrolling him or her in religious education this year so that your child will be ready to receive their 1st Holy Communion during their 2nd grade year, which is usual age for reception of First Communion.

If your child is entering 7th grade in September, and is not already enrolled in religious education, consider enrollment so that your child will be ready to receive their Confirmation during their 8th grade year, which is the usual time for Confirmation in our diocese.

Preparation for the sacraments is a specific two-year program.

Contact the parish office for more information and specify which program, English or Spanish, you need information about. Leave your message at: 773-278-2470.

Adult Religious Education

Are you an adult or young adult (over 17) who needs preparation to receive the sacraments of Communion, Penance, and/or Confirmation?

An adult religious class in English will follow the 10:00 a.m. Mass in the rectory beginning Sunday, September 15.  The class will last about an hour each week and will prepare adults seeking religious instruction for the reception of Comfirmation and/or First Communion and Penance.  All are welcome. For a calendar and more information, email Barb Heyrman at or leave a message at the parish office at 773-278-2470.

The Seven Sacraments of the Church

Christ instituted the sacraments of the new law. There are seven: Baptism, Confirmation, the Eucharist, Penance, the Anointing of the Sick, Holy Orders and Matrimony. The seven sacraments touch all of the stages and all important moments of Christian life.
